Upcoming Event:
beats and beats

Did you miss us?
After some time away, the Philadelphia Poetry Collective is back, and proud to announce their best event yet. In Partnership with the Torrent Art Collective and Apiary Magazine, the PPC is throwing Beats and Beats, a one of a kind poetry slam/dance party/homage/madhouse.
In the style of our successful Emo Sex Poetry Slam last spring, the PPC has decided to take on not one, but two iconic pieces of pop culture: the beat generation- those bongo playing goofballs who also happened to be some of the most influential writers of the last century- , and beat music- which probably hasn't done much for literature but has done plenty for glow sticks. We'll be mashing these two completely unrelated concepts together in any way we can think of, which will result in either a complete mess or a brilliant seamless merger. Either way, we're sure it will be a glorious evening.
The centerpiece of the evening will be the Beat Poetry Slam- that's right, we'll be pitting the best Beat wannabes and mockers against each other in on stage competition. There could be blood (or berets). There will most certainly be prizes. In between rounds, you can expect skits, music and yes, maybe even a little poetry from your hosts.
But wait... there's more.
Because the PPC wants to keep you, our audience, as entertained as possible as long as possible, we'll be throwing a dance party following the slam. The winner can do their own beatnik victory boogie while the losers lose themselves in the music and the rest of us have some fun. We'll have multiple DJs spinning all sorts of stuff worth moving around to.
But wait... there's more. Again.
Apiary Magazine has also gotten involved. Before the Beats come out to play there will be live performances by Apiary artists as we celebrate the release of their latest issue. Packed with over 30 local writers and artists and for the first time completely FREE the magazine (and this one of a kind live reading) is worth checking out.
Did we mention that the whole event is BYOB? If you're over 21, feel free to bring some refreshments of the kind you have to be over 21 to buy.
The Details:
