This flexible and affordable program is designed to help poets produce a finished manuscript. It is led by Andrea, a master's degree holder in fiction from Sarah Lawrence College. She has been living in Philadelphia for the past ten years and works for an independent textbook publisher.
Additionally, she serves as the editorial director of Apiary Magazine, a free annual literary magazine that focuses on authors and artists from the Philadelphia area. The Poetry Collective offers a variety of classes and workshops that are taught in person at The Head and the Hand bookstore (2230 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 1912). During these sessions, writers will be able to discuss how some of the techniques work in their own poems, published works, and drafts of their classmates. They will also be encouraged to expand on one of the exercises they worked on in class. In the last three sessions, they will work on these exercises in a group, focusing mainly on the voice but also on other aspects of the work. Applicants have the option of applying for the Connie Zumpf Poetry Scholarship, which is awarded to one or more poets who have been accepted to the Poetry Collective and who face financial barriers to participating.
